Web Sites Take the Pledge

Since March 2003, more than 200 Web sites have volunteered to "take the Consumer Reports WebWatch pledge," to strive to abide by Consumer Reports WebWatch's five general guidelines for improving Web site credibility.

After taking the pledge, sites were reviewed by Consumer Reports WebWatch to determine whether they provided the level of detail and disclosure called for in our guidelines, and called for by consumers in our continuing research.

Our set of five guidelines is, of course, broad, because it is intended to apply to all Web sites, though there are literally hundreds of types of sites. Some aspects of our guidelines were especially applicable to some sites, not much at all to others.

The appearance of a site on this list does not count as a certification or an endorsement, nor is it a guarantee these sites are "safe" from security or privacy concerns. It is up to these sites themselves to maintain and uphold their commitment to the guidelines. We do believe, however, that by making this commitment, these sites have taken an important step toward improving the credibility of all Web sites.

Further, some of the sites on this list sell products, such as dietary supplements, that Consumer Reports magazine has warned consumers about using. We strongly recommend you read the May 2004 report and chart, 12 Supplements You Should Avoid, in the free content area of ConsumerReports.org.

Consumer Reports WebWatch will also continue to work with Consumer Reports magazine and ConsumerReports.org to provide in-depth ratings of sites, and we will continue to publish research and industry-specific guidelines to address problems in the most-trafficked sectors of the Web.

Note that Web addresses of the sites are not linked. This is because Consumer Reports WebWatch wants to reinforce that our pledge campaign is not a certification, accreditation or seal of approval. In each case, sites on this list have been invited to link back to Consumer Reports WebWatch's page of guidelines only, not this page on which the site's name appears. Many sites do link back to the guidelines, and many do not.

We expect this list to grow:
